There is one phrase that President Russell M. Nelson and his apostles have been emphasizing for a few years...

"Hear Him"

“Our Father knows that when we are surrounded by uncertainty and fear, what will help us the very most is to hear His Son. Because when we seek to hear—truly hear—His Son, we will be guided to know what to do in any circumstance”

President Nelson is guaranteeing us that there is going to be some uncertainty and fear coming ahead and we really need to learn to receive the revelation that the Savior can offer us.

President Nelson also said, “We are presently living in what surely is a most complicated time in the history of the world. The complexities and challenges leave many people feeling overwhelmed and exhausted…I weep over your heartaches, disappointments, and worries… It seems that we are accosted daily by an onslaught of sobering news. You may have had days when you wished you could don your pajamas, curl up in a ball, and ask someone to awaken you when the turmoil is over."

That’s a lot of different types of Chaos that the prophet is warning about...

➡️What came to your mind when you heard him talk about those types of chaos in the world today?

➡️What images come to your mind in your life when you hear him talking about the complexities and challenges that overwhelm and exhaust us?

➡️What mental picture do you have of heartaches, disappointments and worries you're experiencing?

➡️What sobering news comes to your mind?

➡️What things make you want to curl up in a ball and awake when it’s over?

➡️ What mental pictures or situations came to your mind specifically?

Those are the chaoses that rage around you in your life. Those are the things that he is telling you will undoubtedly need the ability to Hear His Son with so you will know what to do in those circumstances.

The problem is, it’s hard to hear the still small voice of the Spirit converting these messages of the Savior when that chaos rages around us.

Elder Renlund talked about this in conference too...

"The Spirit plays a pivotal role in communicating God’s love to us. Yet the influence of the Holy Ghost can be obscured “by strong emotions, such as anger, hate, … [or] fear, … like trying to savor the delicate flavor of a grape while eating a jalapeño pepper. …Similarly, our sense of God’s love may be blunted by challenging circumstances and physical or mental illness, among other things.”

Don't you love that both of these amazing leaders are acknowledging that our mental status and thoughts can affect your ability to hear the Spirit?

But what do you do about it?

What if your fears, frustrations and failures overpower and obscure the Spirit?

What then?

❓What if your thoughts tend to center around a fear that you have done something wrong?

❓What if you have constant worry that people are angry at you?

❓What if your frustrations with other people keep you from feeling peace from God?

❓How then do you hear the whisperings of the Holy Ghost so you can survive spiritually?

It may seem like you are left alone to deal with the heavy burden that your thoughts and mental health can bring to our fallen bodies, but that’s not true.

► ► ► Really understanding how our mental health obscures the Spirit can help you understand what to do about it.

AND Elder Renlund spoke about this very thing in conference too.

“When we yield “to the enticings of the Holy Spirit” and put off the selfish tendencies of the natural man or woman, we can receive the Savior’s transforming power in our lives, the power to do difficult things"

Did you see the one big key there in the equation?

Putting off the natural man.

The natural man inside you is what obscures the Spirit and keeps you from "Hearing Him".

Learning to put off the Natural Man is what can clear up that line of communication and help you hear what the Spirit is conveying. Which may bring up another question for you...

"How do I put off the natural man? I am already saying my prayers, reading my scriptures and going to church. What else can I do to put off the natural man. It doesn’t seem to be working?"

Well that’s when it is important to pull in a different strategy. What about learning Mental Health Skills through a Spiritual lens that decreases chaos in your mind and clears up the communication line with the Lord?
